The questions that come up in almost every early-access conversation: what PieceWrk actually is, what private beta means, who can see what, and how the pay side works. If something below still isn’t clear, ask us directly.
- What is PieceWrk?
- PieceWrk is the field management platform for piece-rate construction crews: plan takeoff, jobsite estimating, proposals, contracts, selections, scheduling, daily production tracking, and payroll, all running on one record instead of four tools that don’t talk to each other.
- Does PieceWrk only work for piece-rate crews?
- Piece-rate is what it was built around, and it’s the part almost no other construction software does properly. But pay is set per rate table, so piece-rate, hourly, and salary crews can all run on it side by side.
- Does it replace QuickBooks?
- No. QuickBooks stays QuickBooks. Two-way sync keeps customers, services, vendors, subcontractors, invoices, and bills in agreement between the two systems: PieceWrk pushes its data to QuickBooks, and changes made in QuickBooks come back rather than silently drifting apart.
- Can I buy PieceWrk today?
- Not yet. PieceWrk is in private beta: real software running a real finish-carpentry business today, not a landing page for something that doesn’t exist. There’s no pricing published, no signup, and no free tier. Request early access and we’ll talk about your crew.
- Is there a demo?
- No canned demo. The first real conversation is walking a plan set or a pay period of yours through the system, not watching a script run on someone else’s data. It’s a better way to find out whether this fits how you run, and it’s usually faster than a feature tour.
- What happens after I request early access?
- A person reads it, not a sequence: if PieceWrk isn’t a fit for how you run, we’ll say so instead of booking a call anyway. If it looks like a fit, we talk through a real plan set or pay period of yours, and if that goes well, we get you set up. Onboarding is hands-on while we’re in beta, which is the reason the group stays small.
- Can my customers see what I pay my subs?
- No. The supplier order, the install labor, your markup, and the customer price are stored as separate values on the same record, and each party is only served the ones they’re entitled to. It’s enforced in the database, not by a setting someone has to remember to toggle.
- Is my company’s data walled off from other companies using PieceWrk?
- Yes. Every company’s records are scoped to that company and enforced with row-level security policies in the database itself, not just a filter in the app. A login that belongs to one company can’t query another company’s jobs, customers, or numbers.
- Is my QuickBooks connection stored safely?
- Yes. QuickBooks tokens are encrypted before they’re stored and scoped to your company, so your connection lives in its own row rather than a shared one. PieceWrk decrypts a token only at the moment it needs to make a QuickBooks request on your behalf.
Pay & payroll
How the money side works
- Does it do clock in and clock out?
- No, and that’s deliberate. Pay comes off what a crew actually logged as completed in daily production, priced against the job’s rate table, not off hours punched on a clock. There is no time-clock feature anywhere in the product, and none is planned: it’s the wrong mental model for a crew paid by the piece.
- How does piece-rate payroll actually work?
- Pay is calculated straight from what the crew logged in daily production, priced against the job’s own rate table (the same table that priced the bid), closed out by pay period, and locked once it’s finalized. Your estimate and your payroll can’t quietly drift apart, because they were never two different numbers.
- Do subcontractors get paid the same way as employees?
- No. Subs run on their own track: work orders, sub change orders, scoped access to only the job they’re on, and job-completion sign-off, with payment reconciled per job rather than run through the same payroll engine as your employees.
- Does it handle certified payroll for prevailing-wage jobs?
- Yes. Wage-determination parsing, fringe handling, straight and overtime splits, and a certified payroll report you can export. It does not generate the federal WH-347 form itself; the report is built for your compliance platform to take from there.
- Does it track PTO for a piece-rate crew?
- Yes. PTO accrues off the same production record that drives pay, with request, approval, and balance history. Real PTO tracking is normally the first thing a piece-rate shop gives up, since there’s no punched-hours baseline to accrue against elsewhere.
